Because this tour is genuinely dedicated to the castle alone, there's time to go deeper than a single-stop pass usually allows. Vladislav Hall, inside the Old Royal Palace, was built between 1490 and 1502 by architect Benedikt Ried for King Vladislaus II — at 62 meters long and 13 meters wide beneath a soaring 16-meter rib vault whose ribs twist across the ceiling in deliberately decorative, non-structural patterns, it was the largest secular vaulted hall in Central Europe at the time, and its wide Riders' Staircase was built specifically so knights could ride their horses directly inside for indoor jousting tournaments.
St Vitus Cathedral gets the same real depth: Charles IV started the project in 1344, master mason Matthias of Arras died in 1352 having barely begun it, Peter Parler took over and reshaped it into the soaring Gothic cathedral seen today, and construction then stalled for centuries before it was finally completed and consecrated in 1929 — 585 years after the first stone was laid.
Around the corner, the Basilica of St George is actually the oldest surviving church building anywhere inside the castle walls — founded by Duke Vratislaus I in 920 and consecrated the following year, its rust-red Baroque facade (added in the late 1600s) hides a plain, austere Romanesque interior that still looks much as it did after a 12th-century fire forced a rebuild.
And then there's Golden Lane, which comes with a genuine myth worth correcting: the tiny pastel houses were built in the 16th century to house castle guards, and later goldsmiths — which is where the name comes from — not Rudolf II's court alchemists, as the popular legend claims. His real alchemists worked inside the Mihulka Tower on the castle's north side. Franz Kafka did briefly live at No. 22, his sister's house, while writing some of his shorter fiction.
