Operation Anthropoid is one of the most significant acts of resistance anywhere in occupied Europe during the Second World War, and this tour covers its real, verified timeline plainly. On 27 May 1942, Czechoslovak paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, trained in Britain and parachuted back into their own country, ambushed Reinhard Heydrich — the acting Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia and one of the chief architects of the Holocaust — on a Prague street. Heydrich was wounded in the attack and died of his injuries on 4 June 1942.
The paratroopers, along with several fellow resistance fighters, took refuge in the crypt of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius near Charles Square — the same real church this tour visits. On 18 June 1942, more than 700 SS troops surrounded the building; after hours of fighting, the defenders were ultimately overwhelmed, and none survived. The crypt remains much as it was, with bullet marks from that day still visible on its walls.
The Nazi reprisals that followed were severe, and this tour addresses them honestly rather than glossing over them. Intelligence, later shown to be false, linked the assassins to the village of Lidice, and on 9 June 1942 German forces killed the village's men — historians generally put the toll at around 199 — deported its women to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, and took its roughly 95 children prisoner, most of whom were later murdered in gas vans at Chełmno. The village itself was then razed and erased from maps.
