The Mount Washington Cog Railway is described as the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway. Sylvester Marsh patented the cog mechanism in 1861 after a stormy climb of the mountain, work began in 1866, and the line was completed in 1869. Skeptics reportedly joked that the legislature approved it because such a scheme could never succeed.
The railway runs a little over three miles, with a maximum grade of about 37 percent on the section called Jacob's Ladder. The summit stands 6,288 feet above sea level, the highest point in the northeastern United States.
The Kancamagus Highway, about 34.5 miles through White Mountain National Forest between Lincoln and Conway, was built from both ends beginning in the 1930s, paused by World War II, and finally opened in 1959 after crews tackled the hardest stretch last.
