Sunset over Casco Bay lights up Fort Gorges, begun in 1858 and completed in 1865 on Hog Island Ledge, whose granite walls are among the harbor's most distinctive silhouettes.

Maine's lobster boats owe much to the Downeast style popularized after William Frost moved from Nova Scotia to Beals Island in 1912: a long keel, low freeboard for hauling traps, and a flattened run aft.

Evening is also a good time to look for harbor seals and for the lights at Bug Light (1875) and Portland Head (1791).
