Maine's classic lobster boat hull has a long local lineage. Accounts credit William Frost, who moved from Nova Scotia to Beals Island in 1912, with popularizing the Downeast style: a fine bow for parting head seas, a flattened run aft for stability, low freeboard for hauling traps, and a full-length keel. His builders' descendants later worked near Portland.
Casco Bay's islands were famously called the Calendar Islands after a 1700 report that there were as many as days in the year. That is a popular myth: the U.S. Coast Pilot lists 136 islands, and one former state historian put the number at a little over two hundred.
Fort Gorges, the granite fort on Hog Island Ledge in Portland Harbor, was begun in 1858 and finished in 1865, one of the harbor's Civil War-era landmarks you can see from the water.
