Heart's Desire was designed by John G. Alden, whose yachts are recognized by a long bowsprit and a raked transom, and was built in 1925 in South Freeport. Sources differ on details: one lists the builder as T.H. Soule rather than T.S. Soule, and one registry entry gives a smaller length than the 53 feet quoted by the current operator. Records show she was first built for a Marblehead, Massachusetts owner and later sailed from Camden and as far as the Virgin Islands before returning to Maine.
Portland Schooner Co., which runs her, operates historic wooden vessels from the Maine State Pier; the fleet is largely built in Maine, with several vessels on the National Register of Historic Places, though that listing does not necessarily apply to every vessel.
Sunset on the water also frames Portland Head Light, first lit in 1791 with whale-oil lamps, and the harbor's lights at Bug Light and Spring Point Ledge.
