Portland Head Light was first lit on January 10, 1791, and is generally described as the first lighthouse completed by the new United States government; the tower had been commissioned under George Washington's direction, with masons Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols building it and Captain Joseph Greenleaf serving as the first keeper.
Bug Light, formally Portland Breakwater Light, marks the end of a breakwater in South Portland. A wooden light first stood here in 1855; the present cast-iron tower, with six Corinthian columns, dates to 1875 and was designed by Thomas U. Walter, who also worked on the U.S. Capitol.
Casco Bay's 'Calendar Islands' nickname comes from a 1700 report of an island for every day of the year. That is more legend than count: the Coast Pilot lists 136 islands, and a former state historian estimated a little over two hundred.
