Portland Head Light was first lit on January 10, 1791, and is generally described as the first lighthouse completed by the new United States government; the tower had been commissioned under George Washington's direction, with masons Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols building it and Captain Joseph Greenleaf serving as the first keeper. Today the Coast Guard maintains the light while the old keeper's house at Fort Williams Park serves as a maritime museum.
Kennebunkport grew up as a shipbuilding and fishing town, and the sea captains' houses around Dock Square still reflect that prosperous past. By the late 1800s it had become a summer resort, and Walker's Point, the Bush family's summer estate, dates to a shingle-style cottage built in 1903.
A small piece of South Portland's lighthouse story: Portland Breakwater Light, known as Bug Light, was rebuilt in 1875 as a cast-iron tower with decorative Corinthian columns, designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect better known for the U.S. Capitol dome. Spring Point Ledge Light followed in 1897.
