Portland Harbor is guarded by several lights with very different personalities. Bug Light on the end of a breakwater was rebuilt in 1875 in cast iron with six decorative Corinthian columns by Thomas U. Walter, architect of the U.S. Capitol's dome. Spring Point Ledge Light, built in 1897, is regarded as one of Maine's best-preserved remaining 'spark plug' lights.
The granite bulk of Fort Gorges on Hog Island Ledge was started in 1858 and completed in 1865, and it never saw combat. It is a striking sight from the water, and it is one of the forts a group on this charter can see.
The harbor's coast guard-maintained Portland Head Light, first lit in 1791, completes a trio of lighthouse eras visible within a short cruise, from early republic to the Victorian age.
