Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the state's oldest settlement, founded as a fishing outpost in 1623 and first called Strawbery Banke. The Strawbery Banke Museum preserves ten acres of houses dating from 1695 to the 1950s. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, founded June 12, 1800 on Seavey Island across the river in Kittery, Maine, is the U.S. Navy's oldest continuously operating shipyard, and it hosted the 1905 Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the Russo-Japanese War.
York preserves the Old Gaol, built about 1719 and a National Historic Landmark, and the Old Burying Ground where victims of the 1692 Candlemas Raid are believed buried.
