Portland Head Light was first lit on January 10, 1791, and is generally described as the first lighthouse completed by the new United States government; the tower had been commissioned under George Washington's direction, with masons Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols building it and Captain Joseph Greenleaf serving as the first keeper.
Boothbay Harbor's Footbridge was built in 1901 by contractor Luther Maddocks for $1,500 using cannery workers. The original was about 885 feet long and seven feet wide with a 75-foot draw, and it was rebuilt after severe ice damage in 1918 and 1928, with later work in 1979, 2017 and 2023.
Maine's coast near Boothbay once relied on ferries or a long walk around the harbor head; the bridge saved pedestrians that trip and connected downtown to Mt. Pisgah and Spruce Point, which developed as summer colonies.
