Playa del Carmen's name comes from Nuestra Senora del Carmen, Our Lady of Carmen, the town's patron saint, and its transformation into a city is a genuinely recent story. It was still a small Maya fishing village as recently as 1980, with its first real dock built just a decade earlier to launch ferry service to Cozumel; the population has grown explosively since, from a few thousand residents into a city of several hundred thousand today, which is part of why your guide can show you a side of Playa that still feels unmistakably local rather than purpose-built for tourism.
The street-art walk your guide leads is centered on the Colosio neighborhood, north along Quinta Avenida past Avenida CTM, where an open-air collection of murals has grown since the mid-2010s. Local and visiting artists, among them Senkoe, whose work draws on pre-Hispanic imagery and dream symbolism, along with Mike Makatron, Farid Rueda, and others, have turned building walls through the neighborhood into a genuine outdoor gallery, a world away from the souvenir shops of the main tourist strip just a few blocks south.
Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) itself remains the city's pedestrian spine, running parallel to the beach through the historic core before continuing north into the quieter, more residential stretches your guide covers on this walk, giving you both the postcard version of Playa del Carmen and the neighborhoods most visitors never see.
