Sac Actun comes from the Yucatec Maya sak aktun, meaning "white cave," a reference to the pale limestone walls that line its passages. For decades it was already known as one of the largest flooded cave systems on the peninsula, but its real scale only became clear in January 2018, when a cave-diving team confirmed a previously unmapped channel physically linking Sac Actun to the neighboring Dos Ojos system — a connection the expedition's lead diver had been searching for across 14 years of exploration, finally located after ten months of focused fieldwork.
That discovery reclassified Sac Actun as the longest known underwater cave system on Earth. As of a July 2019 survey, the combined, connected network measured roughly 371,958 meters, or about 231 miles, of mapped underwater passage. It's worth being precise about the record: Sac Actun is the longest known flooded (underwater) cave system specifically — Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, which is mostly dry, remains longer overall when every type of cave is counted together.
Like every cenote on this coast, Sac Actun exists because the Yucatán Peninsula sits on a shelf of porous limestone with no surface rivers, so for millions of years rainwater has seeped through the rock and slowly dissolved it into this vast underground network of caves and tunnels. This tour visits a section of that system that's separate and distinct from the Dos Ojos stop offered on other Voyzo tours — same connected cave network, different entry point and passages — with your guide explaining the rock formations and the cave's geological history as you swim.
