Playa Cristal sits within Tayrona National Park, which was created on 24 April 1964 and covers roughly 150 km2 of land plus about 30 km2 of sea. It is commonly reached by boat from Taganga in about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on sea conditions.
The beach's draw is clear water and relative calm: its bay is sheltered enough for snorkeling over reef patches. Since it lies within the park, access is regulated, and the park closes periodically at the request of Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada. Tayrona National Park has followed a recurring closure schedule at the request of the Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada (reported as 1-15 February, 1-15 June and 19 October-2 November in recent years), so dates should be confirmed before booking.
A private boat and an unhurried day mean you can choose when to swim and when to rest, which is the practical difference between this tour and the public shuttles.
