The Pitti Palace started life around 1458 as the private residence of Luca Pitti, an ambitious Florentine banker who wanted a home grand enough to rival the Medici themselves. His timing was poor: after Cosimo de' Medici died in 1464, Pitti's fortunes collapsed, and construction stalled. He died in 1472 with the palace still unfinished.
Nearly a century later, in 1549, the building was bought by Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, and it became the chief residence of the ruling Medici family, exactly the kind of grandeur Luca Pitti had originally hoped to project. Over the following generations the Medici filled it with paintings, silverware, and jewelry, much of which still hangs in the Palatine Gallery's rooms today, and expanded the grounds behind it into what became the Boboli Gardens.
Cosimo I also had Giorgio Vasari build an elevated private corridor connecting the Pitti Palace all the way back to the Palazzo Vecchio, running above the Ponte Vecchio's shops, so the family could move across the city without ever setting foot on the street. It's a small detail that tells you a lot about how this one palace, started by a rival family, ended up as the literal endpoint of Medici power in Florence.
