Before Pisa or Lucca, this itinerary makes a stop most Tuscany day trips skip entirely: the hill village of Anchiano, in the comune of Vinci, where Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452 in a farmhouse that had belonged to his family for more than a century and a half. The rural complex, documented as far back as 1427, was donated to the Municipality of Vinci in 1952 and turned into a small museum that still displays the original Da Vinci family coat of arms alongside exhibits on the landscape and ideas that shaped the young Leonardo.
The day's other anchor is Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli, where the bell tower now famous worldwide for leaning took nearly two hundred years to finish. Construction began in 1173, stalled for roughly a century while Pisa fought its neighboring city-states, and only resumed in 1272 under the architect Giovanni di Simone — a pause that, by chance, gave the soft subsoil time to settle before the upper floors went up. The tower wasn't completed until 1372, with builders compensating for the lean in real time by cutting each new course of stone slightly thicker on the low side.
Together, Anchiano and the Field of Miracles make an unusual pairing — one site about a single Renaissance genius's earliest years, the other a four-century engineering story playing out in stone. With your own driver covering the ground between them, there's no need to coordinate separate transport to a village most itineraries never reach at all.
