Lucca is one of the few Italian cities still completely encircled by its own defensive walls, and the ones visitors walk or cycle along today aren't the medieval ones — they're Renaissance fortifications built between 1504 and 1648, commissioned by the Republic of Lucca partly out of wariness toward the expanding Medici next door. Eleven bastioned ramparts connect over four kilometers of curtain wall, making Lucca's circuit the second-largest intact walled Renaissance city in Europe after Nicosia in Cyprus, and unlike most old city walls, these were later converted into a tree-lined public promenade rather than torn down.
The day also takes in Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli, where the Leaning Tower's current 3.97-degree tilt is the result of shallow foundations sunk into unstable, uneven subsoil back in the 12th century. Engineers only stabilized the lean for good between 1993 and 2001, removing soil from beneath the tower's higher side to ease it from a far more precarious 5.5 degrees.
Pisa and Lucca sit close enough together that covering both without a private driver usually means juggling train connections and timetables; here the two stops are simply back to back, leaving more time to actually walk Lucca's ramparts and Pisa's cathedral square rather than the stations in between.
