Pisa's bell tower began tilting almost as soon as it was built. Construction started in 1173 on foundations only about three meters deep, sunk into ground that was firmer on one side than the other — by the time workers reached the third floor, the tower was already visibly leaning south. Work stopped for nearly a century, since Pisa was busy fighting Genoa and Florence, which inadvertently let the soil settle before building resumed in 1272; the tower wasn't finished until 1372, with each later floor built slightly thicker on the low side to counteract the lean rather than correct it outright.
That same lean nearly proved fatal to the monument in modern times. By the 20th century it had reached roughly 5.5 degrees, prompting a major stabilization project between 1993 and 2001 in which engineers carefully extracted soil from beneath the north side of the foundation. The correction eased the tilt to a steadier 3.97 degrees, and engineers now expect the tower's structure to remain stable for at least two more centuries.
This particular trip is built for travelers who want to see that eight-centuries-old engineering story up close without giving up a full day of their Florence stay. Your driver handles the Mercedes-Benz transfer each way, leaving the rest of the half-day free to explore the Campo dei Miracoli's cathedral, baptistery, and tower at your own pace.
