Wupatki's main pueblo is the largest and most architecturally striking of more than 2,000 archaeological sites scattered across this stretch of high desert north of Flagstaff: a multi-story masonry structure of more than 100 rooms, built from thin, reddish Moenkopi sandstone by the Ancestral Puebloan and Sinagua people roughly 800 years ago. Walking its walls today, you can still make out a community room and, just below the pueblo, a genuine ballcourt, one of the northernmost ballcourts ever documented in North America, built using masonry rather than the adobe typical of other Southwestern ballcourts. Its presence here, hundreds of miles from the Mesoamerican cultures that originated the ballgame, suggests the Sinagua picked up the tradition through contact with the Hohokam people of the Phoenix basin to the south.
Sunset Crater itself, a short drive away, is a genuinely young volcano as these things go: geologists date its eruption to around 1085 CE, when a roughly six-mile fissure tore open and buried more than 2,100 square kilometers of the surrounding landscape in ash and black cinder. The eruption forced the Sinagua to abandon settlements directly in its path, but it also had an unexpected long-term effect on the wider region: the fine volcanic ash and cinder actually improved farming conditions by helping the thin desert soil retain moisture, and population at nearby sites, including Wupatki itself, appears to have grown in the decades afterward as displaced farmers moved in to take advantage of the newly fertile ground.
That layered history is part of what makes this pairing worth the drive: a single eruption event that both displaced one community and, over the following century, helped draw in another, all still readable in the red-rock pueblo walls and black cinder slopes you'll walk through on the same afternoon.
