Sedona's famous red color comes down to one mineral: hematite, an iron oxide that stains the region's sandstone a deep rust-red. The rock itself is the Schnebly Hill Formation, laid down as desert dunes and shallow seas during the Permian period roughly 251 to 299 million years ago, and it's the same formation behind Bell Rock, one of the day's signature stops — a butte rising more than 500 feet from the valley floor, its distinctive wide-based, narrowing shape carved out by millions of years of wind and water erosion.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross has its own, more recent story. It was commissioned by rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who was reportedly inspired by the sight of a cross in the newly completed Empire State Building back in 1932, and built into Sedona's red rock cliffs between 1954 and 1956 to a design by architect August K. Strotz of the firm Anshen & Allen. The American Institute of Architects gave it an Award of Honor the following year, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, the day's shopping and gallery stop, dates to 1973, when Nevada businessman Abe Miller discovered a grove of century-old sycamores along Oak Creek and built an arts village around them modeled on San Pedro Tlaquepaque, a real artisan town near Guadalajara, Mexico — the name itself translates roughly to "the best of everything." Between the geology, the architecture, and the arts village, this tour deliberately trades a faster, combined Grand Canyon-and-Sedona pace for real time spent in one place.
