The Desert Botanical Garden traces back to 1939, when the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society established it on this site in Papago Park specifically to preserve and showcase the plant life of the Sonoran Desert, one of the most biologically diverse deserts in the world. Today the garden covers 140 acres, with roughly 55 under active cultivation, and holds more than 50,000 individual plants across some 4,000 species, including what's recognized as one of the largest collections of Sonoran Desert cacti anywhere. Its agave and cactus collections alone run into the thousands of specimens, with about a third of the garden's plants native to the surrounding region.
The tour's first stop, Hole-in-the-Rock, is a different kind of desert landmark entirely: a red sandstone formation in Papago Park shaped over millions of years as water eroded natural hollows, called tafoni, into the rock. The Hohokam people who lived in this valley for centuries used one of its openings as a kind of calendar, tracking how sunlight moving through the hole struck different points on the chamber floor to mark the solstices and equinoxes, a practical, astronomically precise system for timing when to plant crops and hold ceremonies.
From there it's a short drive to Old Town Scottsdale, the city's original commercial district, now a walkable mix of galleries, boutiques, and restaurants built around streets first laid out in the early 1900s, a change of pace after two stops built around rock and desert flora, and a natural place to end a half-day that moves from ancient astronomy to living desert botany to present-day Scottsdale in a single loop.
