Rather than taking the most direct interstate route, this trip climbs north through Oak Creek Canyon on State Route 89A — a 15-mile National Scenic Byway between Sedona and Flagstaff threaded with hairpin switchbacks and dense forest canopy, often described as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon itself for its own dramatic red-rock walls. It's consistently ranked among the most scenic drives in the country, and it adds real character to a day that's already covering two major landscapes.
At the South Rim, the itinerary takes in Mather Point — named for Stephen Mather, the National Park Service's first director, in 1928, and a spot where clear-day visibility can stretch more than 30 miles east and 60 miles west — along with Yavapai Point, home to a geology museum with window views straight onto the canyon's exposed rock layers. A stop at Desert View Watchtower adds a different kind of history: the 70-foot stone tower was completed in 1932 by architect Mary Colter, who based its design on ancestral Puebloan structures at Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and Wupatki, and whose interior murals were painted in part by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.
Sedona's red rocks, by contrast, come from an entirely different and far younger chapter of the region's geology: the Schnebly Hill Formation, a band of hematite-stained sandstone laid down roughly 251 to 299 million years ago during the Permian period. That's a striking contrast with the canyon's own oldest exposed rock, the Vishnu Schist, which is closer to 1.8 billion years old — meaning a single day on this tour can take you across a span of Earth's history that's hard to find packed into one itinerary anywhere else.
