The drive north from Phoenix and Scottsdale skirts the San Francisco Peaks, the eroded remains of an ancient stratovolcano whose highest summit, Humphreys Peak, tops out at 12,633 feet — the highest point anywhere in Arizona. From there the route continues onto the Navajo Reservation, where real desert trading-post culture is still a working part of daily life rather than a recreated attraction.
Cameron Trading Post, your lunch stop, has been in continuous operation since 1916, when it opened as the Little Colorado Trading Post not long after a new bridge over the Little Colorado River made the site a natural crossing point for Navajo and Hopi traders. It's one of roughly ten historic trading posts still operating on the Navajo Nation today, having grown over the decades to include a hotel, an RV park, and a Native American fine arts gallery alongside its original market.
At the South Rim itself, the 25-mile stretch of South Rim Drive takes in Grand Canyon Village and several of the park's classic overlooks, plus the chance to see the El Tovar Hotel up close. Opened in January 1905 by the Fred Harvey Company and designed by architect Charles Whittlesey, El Tovar was built of native stone and Douglas fir shipped in by rail, and it remains the oldest hotel still operating inside the park — designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
