The drive itself is part of what makes this trip work as a single, focused day: the South Rim sits roughly 230 miles from Scottsdale, which works out to about 3.5 to 4 hours each way on good roads. A private driver absorbs that distance for you, climbing out of the Sonoran Desert's saguaros and up through high-desert grassland and ponderosa pine forest as the elevation rises from around 1,100 feet in the Valley to over 6,800 feet at the rim.
What you're driving toward is genuinely hard to overstate: the canyon runs about 277 miles long, stretches up to 18 miles across at its widest, and drops more than a mile straight down from rim to river. The rock exposed in its walls spans nearly two billion years of Earth's history, from the roughly 230-million-year-old Kaibab Limestone capping the rim down to the ancient Vishnu Schist in the Inner Gorge, which geologists date to close to 1.8 billion years old — among the oldest exposed rock on the continent.
Once you arrive, the day is yours to set the pace along the paved South Rim Trail, with unhurried time at viewpoints rather than a scheduled stop-and-go itinerary. The canyon itself was first set aside by Theodore Roosevelt as a national monument in 1908, more than a decade before it formally became Grand Canyon National Park in February 1919 — a reminder that the preserved, walkable rim you'll be standing on has been a protected public landscape for well over a century.
