Philadelphia served as the meeting place of the Continental Congress, and Independence Hall is where both the Declaration of Independence and, later, the Constitution were debated. The Liberty Bell, once hung in the building's tower, is now displayed in its own center on Independence Mall; its famous crack is the result of failed repair attempts rather than a single dramatic event.
Elfreth's Alley is billed as the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the United States. The first houses went up around 1702, and the 32 homes standing today date from between 1728 and 1836, so you are walking an intact early-American streetscape rather than a reconstruction.
Lunch at Reading Terminal Market, a working market hall dating to 1893, is a good way to taste the city, and the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art are the ones Rocky Balboa runs up in the films. With about two hours of driving each way from New York, the long day works because the historic core is compact.
