Parksville looks onto the Strait of Georgia, part of the Salish Sea. The region has been drawing more large marine life in recent years: 21 humpback calves were documented in the Salish Sea in 2021, nearly double the 11 of the year before.
Those humpbacks are born in warm waters off Hawaii or Mexico and travel north with their mothers to feed on krill and baitfish. Bigg's killer whales, the marine-mammal-hunting orcas, are also seen more often than they once were.
Sightings vary by day and season, so a guide with a photography focus can help you get the most from whatever appears, including seals, sea lions and seabirds.
