Paris fell under Nazi occupation after the armistice of 22 June 1940, with the German military administration making its headquarters at the Hôtel Meurice on Rue de Rivoli. Life under occupation was genuinely hard — by 1942, Parisians were rationed to around 1,200 calories a day, roughly half the prewar average, and a strict curfew ran from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The real Gestapo operated from several addresses across the city, including 84 Avenue Foch near Porte Dauphine, a site Resistance survivors later nicknamed 'the Street of Horrors.'
French Resistance networks like Combat and Libération-Nord worked throughout the occupation gathering intelligence, sabotaging German installations, and helping downed Allied airmen escape. Paris finally rose against its occupiers on 19 August 1944, and after six days of fighting, the German garrison surrendered the city on 25 August 1944 — Charles de Gaulle led a triumphant parade down the Champs-Élysées the very next day.
This tour walks genuine Resistance and occupation sites plainly and respectfully, starting at Porte Dauphine, giving real historical grounding to a period Paris doesn't often advertise alongside its more familiar, romantic image — the same streets, seen through a harder, better-documented chapter of the city's own past.
