It's a genuinely striking bit of irony that the Eiffel Tower is now one of the most photographed structures on earth, because when it was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, a petition signed by 300 of Paris's leading artists and writers — including Guy de Maupassant and composer Charles Gounod — publicly condemned it as a monstrous eyesore before it was even finished. The tower outlasted that criticism by well over a century, and its current official height of 330 meters, including a 2022 antenna addition, still makes it one of the tallest structures in the city.
