Versailles began life modestly as a hunting lodge for Louis XIII, who liked having somewhere to stay overnight when he didn't want to ride back to Paris or Saint-Germain-en-Laye before dark. It was his son, Louis XIV, who transformed it into the palace it is today, beginning in 1661 and continuing for decades — eventually moving the entire French royal court and government there in 1682, a decision that reshaped French political life for more than a century.
The Hall of Mirrors, completed in 1684 under the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, remains the palace's most famous room — 357 mirrors lining a gallery built explicitly to showcase French wealth and craftsmanship at a time when mirrors themselves were a genuine luxury good. It later became the setting for a very different kind of history: the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the First World War, was signed in that exact room on June 28, 1919.
