About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, tracing the real, genuine history of Joan of Arc in Rouen, including the site of her real execution. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops in Rouen trace Joan of Arc's genuine history, including the actual site of her execution and Rouen's real Gothic cathedral, painted repeatedly by Monet.
Joan of Arc was executed in Rouen's market square on 30 May 1431, burned at the stake after being convicted of heresy by an English-controlled ecclesiastical court during the Hundred Years' War. She was 19 years old. The site of her execution is marked today in the Place du Vieux-Marché, and it remains one of the most significant locations tied to her real, documented history, not legend.
Rouen itself carries that history alongside a very different artistic legacy. Rouen Cathedral, with its real Gothic facade, was painted more than 30 times by Claude Monet in the 1890s, who worked from a window across the square to capture the building in shifting light — a series now considered one of his major works, held across several major museums.
Tracing Joan of Arc's story through Rouen — a figure later rehabilitated and canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920, nearly 500 years after her execution — alongside the cathedral Monet painted repeatedly gives the day a real sense of how much history one city can hold, from medieval trial records to Impressionist canvases painted from a window across the square.
