The building itself has had a stranger history than most Paris museums: the Hôtel Biron was completed in 1730 by architect Jean Aubert as a private mansion, and over the following two centuries it was used, at various points, as a dance hall, a residence for a community of nuns, and a school for girls, before finally being converted into artist studios in 1908 — which is when Auguste Rodin moved in.
When Rodin fell seriously ill in 1916, the French government agreed to establish a museum there dedicated to his work, and the Musée Rodin officially opened to the public in 1919, three years later. The Thinker and The Kiss, both now among the most recognizable sculptures in the world, are on display inside and across the grounds, alongside The Gates of Hell, the monumental, decades-long project Rodin never fully finished.
With a real practicing artist as your guide, the visit leans on a working artist's own eye for how Rodin actually built these pieces — a different kind of expertise than a standard museum docent brings, inside a building whose own past is almost as unlikely as the sculptures it now houses.
