The Picasso Museum is housed inside the Hôtel Salé, a private mansion built between 1656 and 1659 in the Marais district — one of the grandest surviving 17th-century houses in Paris, and a protected historic monument since 1968, long before it had anything to do with Picasso.
The decision to put his work there came quickly after his death: France's Secretary of State for Culture chose the Hôtel Salé in 1974, just a year after Picasso died, to house the collection the artist's estate transferred to the state in lieu of inheritance tax. After a long renovation, the museum finally opened on 23 September 1985, with 228 paintings, 149 sculptures, and nearly 3,100 drawings and engravings on view — a career-spanning collection housed inside a building that long predates the artist himself.
A 2-hour private visit is enough time to move through the real breadth of that career with a guide, from his earliest work to the pieces made in his final decades, inside a mansion whose own 17th-century architecture is worth slowing down for on its own.
