About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — Paris's real, genuine 19th-century covered shopping passages, a hidden architectural gem. This is a private tour for your group only. Real, genuine 19th-century covered shopping passages are the focus — a real, still-standing architectural style most visitors walk right past.
Paris once had more than 140 covered passages at the height of their popularity in the mid-19th century — glass-roofed shopping arcades that were, at the time, a genuinely modern symbol of urban life, offering shelter from weather and mud in an era before wide paved boulevards. The Passage des Panoramas, opened in 1800, was the first of them and also the first public space in Paris lit by gas. Only around twenty of the original passages have survived to today, most of them real, still-functioning streets rather than museum pieces.
Many passages fell into decline once department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Printemps offered a bigger, more fashionable alternative, and Haussmann's own redevelopment of Paris demolished a number of others outright between 1852 and 1870. The ones that survived — including the Galerie Vivienne, opened in 1826 and known for its elegant mosaic floors — saw a genuine revival starting in the 1980s, when their architectural charm was rediscovered and many were carefully restored to something close to their original look.
