The building itself is as much a part of the story as the art inside it: the Gare d'Orsay was built between 1898 and 1900 by architect Victor Laloux as a mainline railway station, serving electric trains to southwest France until the platforms became too short for modern trains and the station closed to long-distance service in 1939. It sat half-abandoned — used at times as a mail-sorting centre and even a film set — before its Historical Monument status led the French government to convert it into an art museum, which opened in 1986.
What you're walking through today is the old station's central nave, where the train platforms once stood, now covered by its original glass roof with the station's own clock still hanging in place. Inside, the Musée d'Orsay holds the world's largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings — Monet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, and more — making it the direct link between the Louvre's pre-1848 collection and the more recent art that followed.
