Claude Monet spent real, considerable effort on how his Water Lilies murals would actually be displayed, working directly with architect Camille Lefèvre to design two oval rooms specifically for them — the two ovals together form the shape of an infinity symbol. Eight panels in total, each about 2 meters high and running to a combined 91 meters in length, wrap continuously around the walls of those two rooms, exactly as Monet intended.
The paintings were originally meant for a different museum entirely — the Musée Rodin — before France's Council President, Georges Clemenceau, a personal friend of Monet's, pushed to have them installed in the Orangerie instead. The donation was finalized in 1922, and the purpose-built rooms finally opened to the public on 16 May 1927, just months after Monet's death.
