Notre-Dame's story begins in 1163, when construction started on what would become one of the great masterpieces of French Gothic architecture — a building effort that stretched across nearly two centuries and multiple generations of medieval masons and architects. Perched on the Île de la Cité at the symbolic heart of Paris, the cathedral witnessed Napoleon's 1804 coronation and inspired Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, which did much to spark the 19th-century restoration led by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc — the same restoration that gave the cathedral its now-famous spire.
On 15 April 2019, a fire tore through the cathedral's roof and timber frame, destroying the spire and much of the lead-covered roof structure in full view of a shocked world. The stone vaulting largely held, saving the interior and its treasures, but what followed was a five-year, multi-billion-euro restoration effort drawing on traditional medieval carpentry techniques — including hand-hewn oak beams — to rebuild the roof frame as closely as possible to the original.
Notre-Dame officially reopened to visitors on 7 December 2024, and as of 2026 the cathedral welcomes the public with free entry, though a mandatory online time-slot reservation is required to manage the crowds — more than six million visitors came through in just the first six months. Some restoration work continues even now, with detailed stained-glass conservation extending into 2026, and the cathedral's towers — closed since the fire — are scheduled to reopen for public tours later in 2026.
