This tour takes in Notre-Dame's exterior rather than its interior, which reopened to the public on 7 December 2024 after the 2019 fire and a five-year restoration — current entry requires a free, timed online reservation. From outside, you can still appreciate the cathedral's flying buttresses and twin towers on the Île de la Cité while your guide walks through its real, nearly 900-year history.
Beneath the cathedral square lies the Crypte Archéologique, a genuine excavation site uncovered in 1965 during work to build an underground parking garage — one of Paris's earliest large-scale urban archaeology sites preserved in place rather than cleared away. Walkways let you look down on real Gallo-Roman masonry, medieval cellars, and the foundations of a 19th-century foundling hospital, all layered on top of each other in a single compact space — a genuinely rare chance to see nearly two thousand years of the city's history stacked in one spot.
Sainte-Chapelle was consecrated in 1248, built on the order of King Louis IX to house his collection of relics of Christ's Passion, including the Crown of Thorns. Its upper chapel holds 15 stained-glass lancet windows, each roughly 15 meters tall, depicting 1,113 biblical scenes in brilliant color — about two-thirds of it still the original 13th-century glass, making it one of the most extensive surviving collections of medieval stained glass anywhere in the world.
