Of the five beaches where Allied forces landed on 6 June 1944 — Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword — Omaha Beach saw the highest casualties, largely due to its steep bluffs, strong German defensive positions, and rough seas that scattered landing craft off their intended targets.
