About This Tour

Au Lapin Agile, one of Montmartre's most storied cabarets, started life around 1860 under the rougher name 'Au Rendez-vous des Voleurs' — 'Where the Thieves Meet.' It got its current identity in 1875, when artist André Gill painted a sign showing a rabbit leaping from a saucepan, and Parisians began calling the place 'Le Lapin à Gill,' which eventually became 'Lapin Agile.' In the early 1900s, cabaret singer and nightclub owner Aristide Bruant bought the building to save it from demolition, and Picasso's 1905 painting of the venue helped make it genuinely world-famous — it still hosts live chansons today, largely unchanged.

A short walk away sits Montmartre's own working vineyard, Clos Montmartre — about 2,000 vines on a plot saved from redevelopment in 1933 by artist Francisque Poulbot, who convinced the city to plant grapes there instead of apartments. It still produces around 1,000 to 1,500 bottles a year, celebrated every October at the Fête des Vendanges harvest festival, held continuously since 1934.

Real wine, cheese, and pastry tastings are threaded through the walk between these stops, giving you a genuine taste of Montmartre's food traditions alongside its cabaret and winemaking history — the same kind of small, independent shops that have supplied the neighborhood's cafés and cellars for generations, rather than a single catered stop.
