Montmartre takes its name from its hilltop position, and at its height the neighborhood had more than a dozen windmills dotting the slope, used for grinding grain and pressing grapes from the surrounding vineyards. Only two survive today — the Moulin de la Galette and the Moulin Radet — and the most famous 'moulin' of all, the Moulin Rouge, opened in 1889 not as a working windmill but as a cabaret that borrowed the name and image for its own red-bladed facade.
French chocolate and pastry making are genuinely old, exacting crafts — chocolatiers typically train for years to master tempering and ganache work, while classic pastries like the croissant and the pain au chocolat follow laminated-dough techniques refined over more than a century. Montmartre's own small, independent chocolatiers and pâtisseries carry these traditions forward on a much more intimate scale than the big Paris chocolate houses, often using the same hand-finishing methods that have defined French confectionery for generations.
Tastings are woven through a walk of Montmartre's real streets, giving a genuinely focused look at the neighborhood's sweeter side rather than a broader historical survey — a deliberately narrower lens than the general art-and-culture Montmartre walk, built specifically for anyone whose main interest in the hill is what's behind the bakery window.
