A century ago, cheap rents on Montmartre's hill drew a wave of struggling painters whose work now sells for millions — Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Maurice Utrillo, who at one point shared the same address at 12 rue Cortot, now the Musée de Montmartre. Pablo Picasso moved into the Bateau-Lavoir, a ramshackle artists' building, in 1904, and it was in his studio there in 1907 that he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon — a canvas many art historians consider the real starting point of modern art.
That creative ferment spilled out onto the Place du Tertre, Montmartre's village square since 1635, which by the late 1700s through World War I had become the genuine gathering point for the neighborhood's painters, poets, and songwriters. Easel painters still set up there today — a direct, living continuation of a scene that once counted Matisse, Picasso, and Modigliani among its regulars.
Woven between the art and history stops are real tastes of the neighborhood's food culture — the kind of small bakeries, cafés, and food shops that fed those same artists then and still feed the neighborhood today, giving this tour a genuinely rounded picture of Montmartre rather than just its most famous landmarks.
