According to tradition, Mont-Saint-Michel's origins trace back to 708 AD, when the Bishop of Avranches, Aubert, is said to have been instructed in a vision by the Archangel Michael to build a sanctuary on the rocky island. Whether or not the full legend is precise, the abbey that grew from it was genuinely built and expanded over centuries, through the medieval period, into the distinctive layered structure visitors see today.
What makes the site dramatic isn't just the architecture — it's the tide. Mont-Saint-Michel sits in a bay with one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, with the water receding far enough at low tide to expose vast stretches of sand around the island, then returning fast enough at high tide to genuinely isolate it again. Timing a visit around real tidal conditions is part of what makes the site feel alive rather than static.
The abbey's interior layers centuries of construction — Romanesque sections from the earlier medieval period sit alongside later Gothic additions, a result of the site being rebuilt and extended repeatedly as techniques, needs, and the number of resident monks changed over time. It's a genuinely rare example of visible architectural history stacked within one building, rather than smoothed into a single style.
