The Musée Marmottan Monet became the custodian of the world's largest Monet collection almost by accident of family history: in 1966, Monet's son Michel donated more than 300 of his father's paintings to the museum, instantly making it home to far more Monet works than any other institution on earth, including the Musée d'Orsay.
Among those works is Impression, Sunrise, the 1872 painting that literally gave the Impressionist movement its name after a critic used the title mockingly. It has its own dramatic real history, too: the painting was stolen from the Marmottan in 1985 and stayed missing for five years before it was recovered and returned to public display in 1991.
Because the collection is concentrated in one relatively small, less-visited museum rather than spread across a flagship institution, a private guided visit here tends to feel noticeably more intimate than the larger Monet holdings at the Orsay or Orangerie — a genuinely different pace for seeing the same artist's work.
