The Hôtel de Sully, built between 1624 and 1630 for the financier Mesme Gallet and later named for the Duke of Sully who bought it in 1634, was once one of Le Marais' genuine intellectual salons, hosting guests like Voltaire and Madame de Sévigné when the neighborhood was still the city's most fashionable address. Today it houses France's national heritage authority, the Centre des monuments nationaux, and its restored courtyard and orangery garden are a quiet, real glimpse of 17th-century noble Paris.
Food and wine stops along the way take in the genuine spirit of the Marché des Enfants Rouges, Paris's oldest covered market, established in 1615 and named for the red-clad orphans once cared for at a nearby charity hospital. It ran continuously for over 300 years before falling briefly into disrepair in the 1990s, only to be revived by local residents — today it's a real working market blending fresh produce stalls with small, sit-down food counters.
Real French food and wine tastings are woven through the walk between these stops, grounding the history in actual flavors from the neighborhood's own tables — small producers and family-run counters rather than a single generic sampling platter, so the food itself carries as much of the neighborhood's real character as the buildings do.
