Leonardo da Vinci began the Mona Lisa in Florence in the early 1500s, and the small poplar-panel portrait eventually made its way into the French royal collection and then the Louvre, where it's been the museum's single biggest draw for well over a century. At just under 3 feet tall, it's considerably smaller than most visitors expect — one more reason a focused, guided hour pays off instead of circling the galleries looking for it.
The painting's fame was cemented by real drama: on 21 August 1911, an Italian former Louvre employee named Vincenzo Peruggia stole it off the wall and smuggled it out under his coat, in what's considered the first theft of a painting from a museum in recorded history. It stayed missing for more than two years before Peruggia tried to sell it to a Florence gallery and was caught — he served just six months in prison, and was treated as something of a patriot back home in Italy.
With roughly 460,000 works in the Louvre's total collection and about 35,000 on display at once, finding one specific painting efficiently is genuinely not a given — this express format is built around skipping the wandering and getting you in front of the real thing, with time to actually look at it, in about an hour.
