Chenonceau, one of the real highlights among Loire Valley châteaux, owes much of its character to the women who shaped it rather than the kings who owned it outright. Diane de Poitiers, mistress to Henri II, added the château's famous gallery spanning the River Cher; after Henri's death, his widow Catherine de' Medici reclaimed the property and extended that same gallery, turning it into the grand two-story bridge visitors see today.
