Claude Monet lived at Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926 — more than four decades in the same house and garden, which is a big part of why the property feels so lived-in rather than like a museum staged after the fact. He bought and gradually expanded both the house and the surrounding land specifically to create the garden he wanted to paint, rather than painting whatever garden happened to be there.
The water-lily pond, the one most visitors come for, wasn't part of the original property — Monet diverted a small branch of the nearby River Epte to create it years after settling in, then spent the rest of his life painting it in changing light. It's the direct inspiration behind his famous Nymphéas (Water Lilies) series, dozens of canvases now scattered across major museums worldwide.
The house itself, with its pink facade and green shutters, still holds Monet's personal collection of Japanese woodblock prints, which genuinely shaped his eye for color and composition. Because the tour is private, your guide can spend real time on the parts of the garden and collection that interest your group most, rather than rushing through on a fixed script.
