Yes, genuinely — Vaux-le-Vicomte's lavish 1661 debut is widely said to have alarmed Louis XIV, who had its owner, Nicolas Fouquet, arrested soon after, then reportedly hired the same architect, landscape designer, and painter to build Versailles.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — two real, genuine French châteaux: Fontainebleau, a former royal residence, and Vaux-le-Vicomte, the genuine inspiration for Versailles. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include Château de Fontainebleau, a genuine former royal residence, and Vaux-le-Vicomte, the real château that directly inspired Versailles.
Château de Fontainebleau served as a residence for French monarchs for roughly 800 years, from the medieval period through Napoleon, making it one of the longest continuously used royal residences in the country. Each era left its own mark on the building, so the interior genuinely layers medieval, Renaissance, and later Napoleonic styles rather than reflecting any single period cleanly.
Vaux-le-Vicomte's story is more dramatic and more specific. Built starting in 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, the château was so lavish — and its 1661 unveiling party reportedly so extravagant — that it's widely said to have alarmed the young king, who had Fouquet arrested shortly after on charges of embezzlement. Louis XIV then reportedly hired the same architect, landscape designer, and painter who built Vaux-le-Vicomte to build Versailles.
Seeing both in one day makes that connection tangible: the château that may have inspired Versailles' ambition, and the older royal residence Versailles eventually eclipsed in grandeur. It's a genuinely different way to understand Versailles than visiting it on its own, without the context of what came just before it.
