The Eiffel Tower was never supposed to be permanent. Gustave Eiffel's original agreement with the city gave it a 20-year lifespan, with demolition planned for 1909 — and it was only saved at the last minute because someone realized its height made it an ideal spot for a radio telegraphy antenna, a use that proved valuable enough during the First World War that the tower was never taken down. What was meant to be temporary became one of the most enduring symbols of romance in the world.
