Gustave Eiffel's engineering firm built the tower in just over two years, between 1887 and 1889, as the centerpiece of that year's Exposition Universelle, the world's fair that went on to draw roughly 32 million visitors. It wasn't universally welcomed at first — a petition signed by 300 of Paris's own artists and writers, including Guy de Maupassant and composer Charles Gounod, publicly protested its construction as an eyesore before it was even finished.
With a 2022 addition of a new digital-radio antenna, the tower's official height now reaches 330 meters, making the summit genuinely one of the highest public viewing points in Paris. Reaching it with a private guide, rather than in the general queue, means spending your limited time at the top actually taking in those views instead of waiting for an elevator slot.
